Beyond the Lake Book Club

Welcome

📚 April '26 Book Selection
Can't Hurt Me by david goggins

Can't Hurt Me is David Goggins's raw, unflinching memoir of transforming himself from a depressed, overweight young man with a traumatic childhood into the only person in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller — and one of the world's top endurance athletes. Part autobiography, part operating manual, the book introduces his 40% Rule: the idea that when your mind tells you you're done, you've actually only tapped into 40% of what your body and will can deliver. Each chapter pairs his life story with a challenge for the reader, turning the book into a practical guide for anyone willing to confront their own limits, callus the mind, and push past comfort to reach their full potential.

Welcome to Beyond the Lake Book Club!

This isn’t just a book club; it’s a space to connect, share, and explore beyond the roles and routines that fill our weekdays. We’re so much more than what we do from 9 to 5, and this club is a reminder of that—an opportunity to carve out time for curiosity, connection, and conversations.

Whether you’re a client, a friend, a family member, or just a fellow book lover, you’re welcome here. And the best part? You don’t have to be local to Philadelphia to join (though if you are, we’ll sprinkle in some “Go Birds!” spirit 🦅).

A Bit of a Backstory

During the early days of COVID, my college friends and I — spread across the country, with one even joining from El Salvador—decided to start a book club. We were a group of former fraternity brothers who’d played collegiate soccer and lacrosse together, not exactly your typical book club crowd. But it turned out to be the perfect way to keep a sense of normalcy, find a little distraction from the uncertainty, and reconnect in a fun, thought-provoking way.

Surprisingly, we made it through a good number of diverse books, and those discussions became something we all looked forward to. Now, I want to bring that same sense of connection and exploration to you!

  • How it works

The Beyond the Lake Book Club is easygoing, flexible, and meant to be a space where everyone feels welcome. Here’s the scoop:

    • One Book per Month: Each month, we’ll explore a new book across genres—fiction, non-fiction, business, biographies, and beyond.

    • 🌟 Member Book Selection: Each person who joins will have the opportunity to choose a book of their liking, as we’ll take turns selecting a new book each month. This way, we’ll explore a diverse range of topics and perspectives, keeping every discussion fresh and engaging.

    • How You Read Is Up to You: Audiobook, hardcopy, Kindle, or any other format—whatever works best for you. (I’ll be listening to audiobooks myself.)

👉 Interested in joining? Just email me and I’ll add you to the group.

No Strings Attached

This isn’t a subscription or month-to-month commitment. There’s no need to join every meet-up, and if you’d prefer to read along on your own without joining the video chat, that’s fine too! Whether you’re in for every book or just one, Beyond the Lake Book Club is all about flexibility, fun, and connecting when life allows.

We can’t wait to get started, share great reads, and spend a little time together each month. See you in the club!

Looking forward to reading with you,
Chris Gatsch
